assam protests: Assam: District administration of Cachar and Karimganj clamps prohibitory orders-Share Market Daily

A protest was held in Sonai in of Assam against BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma’s statement against Islam on Saturday. Sensing breach of peace and tranquility the district administration of Cachar and Karimganj clamped prohibitory orders.

A senior official in state government stated that Owasi Fan club had planned a rally in protest against the remark however permission was not given following which a group of people in a field organised a protest. There was sloganeering and effigies were burnt.

The Cachar district administration stated, “Whereas it has been made to appear before me that mass Rallies and protests are organised in various parts of the district since the last few days involving huge gathering And, whereas some persons may indulge in anti social activities and intimidate genuine public causing annoyance.And, whereas there is apprehension that this may lead to breach of public peace and tranquillity. ”

The order stated Now, therefore, in exercise of the powers conferred upon me U/S 144 Cr.P.C. I Dipak Jidung, Addl.District Magistrate, Cachar Prohibit assembly of five or more persons at any place of Cachar district.No person shall carry arms, weapons, explosives, lathis, spears, stones or any other lethal weapons which can cause injury, except by Army ,Para-Military Forces, Police on duty .No person/organisations shall take out any procession /Rallies agitational protest or hold any public meeting without specific permission from the District Magistrate /Addl. District Magistrate, Cachar, Silchar.No person shall burst any cracker/bombs/other sound producing materials and display any fireworks in public places and thoroughfares. No person/organisations shall use any loudspeaker/microphone/sound amplifying devices etc without obtaining specific permission.

The Deputy Commissioner of Karimganj stated, “Whereas, in view of emerging situation on the law & order front aftermath the controversial statement by a leader and protests have been seen in many places of the Country as reported in various media, there is an ample apprehension of breach of public peace and tranquility, loss of human life and property due to public gathering for the aforementioned purpose in the District.

No procession / rally / dharna / distribution of leaflets / banners and posters etc. attracting breach of public peace & tranquility will be allowed in the Karimganj District.”
