An 18-year-old boy from the Dalit community died on Saturday after he was allegedly beaten up by a teacher in a private school in the Jalore district of Rajasthan for touching a drinking water pot, according to the police.

Indra Meghwal, the child who was injured, was taken to a hospital in Ahmedabad for treatment.

Despite this, he died in the hospital while he was being treated on Saturday, according to police officials.

As a result of the arrest, the police have charged Chail Singh, 40, with murder and under sections of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act for his involvement in the attack.

The internet has also been suspended in the area in order to prevent the situation from escalating further.

The Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Ashok Gehlot, expressed grief over the incident and said the teacher has been booked for murder and has been arrested under the SC/ST Act as well.

There has been an investigation initiated by the Rajasthan Education Department into the matter and the chairman of the Rajasthan SC Commission, Khiladi Lal Bairwa, has ordered that the matter be taken up under the case officer’s scheme for a fast investigation.

The Superintendent of Police of Jalore Harsh Vardhan Agarwalla confirmed that the boy had been severely beaten up and that the reason cited for the beating – touching a pot of drinking water – was yet to be investigated.

The police officer said, “We have filed a case against the teacher, Chail Singh, under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code and the Scheduled Castes and Tribes Act and we have arrested him,”.

It was reported by the boy’s father that he sustained injuries to his face and ear in the incident, and was almost knocked unconscious. He was taken to the local hospital, from where he was referred to a hospital in Udaipur for further treatment.

“The boy had been admitted at the hospital in Udaipur for about a week, but since his condition did not improve, we took him to Ahmedabad to be treated. However, his condition did not improve even there, and he sadly passed away on Saturday,” the boy’s father said.

According to the state education department, two officials have been asked to investigate the matter and submit a report to the block education officer regarding the matter.

The leader of the BJP in the state, Shehzad Poonawalla, asked how long the state government would continue to commit injustice against Dalits.

As I read your tweets this morning, I was appalled to read that in a private school in Surana village in Jalore district in Rajasthan, a Dalit child was assaulted because he drank water from a pot- the child died during treatment.

CM @ashokgehlot51 Ji, how long will this injustice on Dalits continue? In a tweet, the BJP leader questioned the whereabouts of Rahul Gandhi.
