Elton John and Britney Spears have teamed up for the first time, creating the slinky, club-ready single “Hold Me Closer,” which sees the pop icons taking old sounds and creating something completely new with them.

The funky, piano-driven single is built on the skeleton of John’s hit from 1971, “Tiny Dancer,” and adds elements from John’s songs “The One” and “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart,” all delivered with Britney Spears’ soaring and fluttering voice.

In spite of the fact that John has released new music in the past few years – including the 16-track 2021 album “The Lockdown Sessions” – this song represents Spear’s first new music since her 2016 album “Glory,” and her first since the end of her contentious conservatorship.

As John made clear in a statement, “She is one of the all-time great pop stars and her voice sounds amazing on this record.

I love her dearly and am delighted with what we have created together,” he said. In her statement, Britney Spears said that working with John was an honor and that it was an honor to be asked: “I am so grateful that I got the chance to work with you and your legendary mind.”

It was produced by Andrew Watt, who has worked with such acts as Ed Sheeran, Eddie Vedder, Ozzy Osbourne, Justin Bieber, Post Malone, and Miley Cyrus to name a few.

At the beginning of the song, both stars sing the opening lyrics to the song “The One” – “I saw you dancing out of the ocean/Running fast along the sand/A spirit born of earth and water/Fire flying from your hands.” Then, the song seamlessly shifts to “Tiny Dancer”: “Hold me closer, tiny dancer/Count the headlights on the highway/Lie me down on sheets of linen/Your day was extremely busy today.”

There is a strong resemblance between this track and last year’s hit “Cold Heart (PNAU Remix),” which combined John’s songs “Kiss the Bride,” “Rocket Man,” “Where’s the Shoorah?” and “Sacrifice” into a dance track featuring Dua Lipa’s vocals.

The first time John met Spears was at an Oscar viewing party in 2014, and she later tweeted her love of “Tiny Dancer”, sowing the seeds for the latest collaboration between the two artists. At the moment, John is in the middle of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour.
