At the Rumble in the Rockies volleyball tournament in Wyoming, Iowa State volleyball split its first two matches on Friday.

On the opening day of the 2022 season, Iowa State fell in straight sets to No. 18 Creighton in its season debut.

In a true road matchup against the host school Wyoming, the Cyclones returned to form and won their first victory of the season in four sets in a true road matchup for the team.

Duckworth leads again

Last Friday in Ames, Iowa State faced Missouri, a member of the SEC conference, for the first time outside of the conference this season.

In her first appearance at Hilton Coliseum, true freshman Maya Duckworth impressed by leading the Cyclones with 17 kills in her first match.

After the Cyclones defeated the Tigers in five sets, head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch said Duckworth displayed a feeling of confidence and comfortability that Cyclones fans could get used to as the season progressed.

Duckworth led the way once again as the team faced its first official opponent of the season on Friday.

In Iowa State’s first match against Creighton, Duckworth led her team with 12 kills as well as one service ace in the match.

After five seasons as a Cyclone, Eleanor Holthaus earned 11 kills in the first match of the fifth season of her career.

Furthermore, the senior also recorded a hitting percentage of .450 as part of his performance.

With 12 digs, Jaden Newsome led the way on the defensive side of the ball. At the end of the game, the Cyclone’s starting setter achieved the milestone of 300 career digs. With 25 assists, Newsome also led the team in terms of assists.

Three Tight sets

Despite being a fellow 2021 NCAA tournament team, Iowa State lost in a sweeping manner to Creighton in the first round.

The Creighton University team finished the year with a record of 31-4 and reached the second round of the NCAA tournament in 2021. During Friday’s matchup, the Cyclones and Bluejays finished both sets within five points of each other.

The Bluejays took the lead in the first set of the matchup with Creighton, with a score of 10-5. As a result, the Cyclones rallied to bring the score to 14-14. In the first set of the game, the senior Holthaus led the Cyclones with four kills and a .667 hitting percentage, leading the team in scoring.

Despite being down a set to one, Creighton was able to maintain its lead and win the first set 25-21.

Norah Sis, the Big East freshman of the year, continued Creighton’s lead in set two for the Wildcats. Sis, who ranked second in the Big East in kills per set in 2021, recorded three consecutive kills in the second set to allow Crighton to pull ahead in the game.

As a result, Creighton won the second set by a score of 25-20.

During the final set, the Cyclones came within one point of winning the set with a score of 22-21. The team from Creighton, however, maintained its 6-1 early lead and went on to win the set and the match by a score of 25-22.

Cyclones respond

The first day of the Rumble in the Rockies was completed by Iowa State taking on Wyoming, the host team, in order to complete the first day without a win in 2022.

Despite losing the first set 25-19 to the Cowgirls, Iowa State responded by winning three consecutive sets to complete the team’s first win of the year by winning three consecutive sets.

It was Holthaus’ 12 kills against Wyoming that led Iowa State’s offensive effort in match two of the series. A total of 43 assists were accounted for by Newsome, and 21 digs were accounted for by Stonestreet, the starting libero.

In their second game of the season, the Cyclones will attempt to leave Laramie, Wyoming, with a winning record against the 1-1 Shockers.
