Matt Carpenter, the Yankees’ slugger who has just left the Cardinals, got emotional before his first series in St. Louis since leaving the Cardinals and revealed how much he and his family are looking forward to returning, especially his five-year-old son.

It depends on the day, he tells his buddies if he’s a Cardinal or a Yankee, he doesn’t know,” Carpenter said of his friend.

“They were pretty excited when we told them last week that we would be coming to St. Louis.”

At that point, Carpenter became choked up and had to take a moment to collect himself before continuing.

Since Carpenter made his major league debut in 2011, the same year that St. Louis won the World Series, he has spent his entire career with the Cardinals, making his debut in the major league in 2011, the same year that St. Louis won the World Series, and playing his final game with the team last year.

Over the course of four years, he hit over 20 home runs, made three All-Star games, and played in three All-Star games. Aside from that, he also led the major leagues in 2013 with 199 hits.

However, Carpenter and the Cardinals have had a rough go of it over the last few seasons. He only managed to hit three home runs with a .581 OPS in 249 plate appearances in 2021, which resulted in him not being able to sign a major-league contract as a free agent due to his poor performance.

It was Carpenter’s goal during the offseason to reshape his swing, insisting that he was not finished as a major leaguer yet.

Aside from playing the first part of the season in the Ranger’s minor leagues, he opted out of his contract and signed with the Yankees in May of this year.

He has had a resurgence season since then, accumulating 15 home runs and a 1.226 OPS in just 139 plate appearances in the first few weeks of the season.

As the designated hitter and batting third for his return to the game, Carpenter received a great ovation on his first at-bat as a designated hitter.
