As a result, side airbag curtains may not meet federal standards when it comes to preventing passengers from being ejected during a crash.

The Ford Maverick is being recalled as a result of a defective side curtain airbag, Consumer Reports has reported.

These airbags may not meet the federal safety regulations that prevent passengers from being ejected from the vehicle in the event of a rollover or side-impact collision, according to the publication.

The issue was discovered during a verification test conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the federal agency responsible for vehicle safety.

The manufacturers certify that their own vehicles meet applicable safety regulations based on their own company crash tests, but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will occasionally randomly test certain vehicles to ensure that they meet these regulations.

As a result of the agency’s findings, Ford halted the installation of the faulty airbags on new vehicles at the factory and issued a “stop ship” order.

Currently, the automaker is still building vehicles, but it is awaiting parts to be able to install updated airbags on new Mavericks that are built after July 9, 2022.

Basically, if you have recently purchased a Maverick but are still waiting for the vehicle to arrive, you may have to wait a bit longer while Ford replaces the airbag on the vehicle.

In the event that you already own a Maverick, Ford will replace your airbags for free if you are already in possession of the vehicle.

Ford assured Consumer Reports that you shouldn’t stop driving your vehicles in the meantime since wearing your seatbelt will prevent you from being ejected during an accident.

While you wait for your airbags to be replaced, drive with extra caution.

Ford will begin mailing notifications to owners of affected vehicles on September 22, 2022. To find out if your vehicle is affected by the recall, you can also enter your VIN on the NHTSA’s website.
