Coach Kyle Shanahan called Ward’s hamstring injury a “pretty bad” one on Aug. 14, and although the Niners acknowledged that Ward would miss some time, it is possible that he will miss the first month of the season as a result.
During the pregame show for Thursday’s preseason finale against the Houston Texans, Niner’s general manager John Lynch stated that Ward is likely to enter injured reserve to begin the season, which would mean he would miss the first four games of the year.

As Lynch said on Amazon’s broadcast, “he allows us to do what we do.”. According to Lynch, “he plays like a safety, but he also covers like a corner. He’s one of our best cover men, so it’s a big loss, but we’ve got to figure out a way to replace him.”
As a result of Ward not being able to play, the Niners signed veteran safety Tashaun Gipson on Monday in order to increase their depth and competition.
After recently returning from a rib injury, Dontae Johnson, who is entering his ninth season in the NFL, is being given a long look at free safety after moving from cornerback to safety in training camp.
After Ward’s injury, Tarvarius Moore and George Odum have been taking his place in the starting lineup.
According to the rules of the NFL, if the 49ers want Ward to land on injured reserve with the option to return, they cannot make that move until after the rosters are cut down to the initial 53 players.
In other words, the Niners will have to keep Ward on their 53-man roster until after 4 p.m. Eastern Time on Wednesday before they can place him on the injured reserve list.
In the event that they did it before then he would have to miss the rest of the season if they did it before.
