Kobe Bryant, the basketball legend, would have turned 44 on Aug. 23. The sports world also celebrates the five-time NBA champion on Aug. 24 (8/24) — Mamba Day, coined after the two numbers Bryant wore during his 20-year career in the league.

Since Bryant passed away in January 2020, these two dates in late August hold a special place in the hearts of Lakers fans. As a matter of fact, the Los Angeles City Council even declared the 24th of August, 2016 as Kobe Bryant Day 2016.

Several new babies, as well as potential future fans of the Lakers, received purple and gold gift packages themed around Kobe Bryant.

There were blankets for the babies who were born at UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital, baby beanie hats with the No. 8 on them, and a note from the Lakers for them.
