When Pau Gasol’s number is retired in the Lakers’ rafters next season, he will become the latest in a long line of legendary big men.

Los Angeles Lakers are going to honor Gasol’s No. 16 when they host the Memphis Grizzlies on March 7, the team announced Wednesday as part of its schedule release for the 2022-23 season.

In 2008, Gasol was traded from Memphis to Los Angeles, and he teamed up with Kobe Bryant to lead the Lakers to three straight NBA Finals appearances and two championships in as many years.

He played for the Los Angeles Lakers from 2009 to 2014, when he signed with the Chicago Bulls as a free agent. During his time with the franchise, he made three of his six career All-Star appearances.

After a final season in his native Spain, he retired from basketball last fall.

It will hang alongside those of Hall of Fame center Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Shaquille O’Neal, and Wilt Chamberlain, as well as those of Bryant, Magic Johnson, Jerry West, Elgin Baylor, James Worthy, Gail Goodrich, and Jamaal Wilkes.
