It took a brace from Aleksandar Mitrovic and strikes from Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah to cancel out Mitrovic’s brace as newly promoted Fulham held Liverpool to a 2-2 draw at Craven Cottage in the sides’ opening Premier League game of the season on Saturday.

On 32 minutes, the home side was able to take the lead when they broke down the right, and Kenny Tete’s cross was met by the bustling Mitrovic, who out-jumped Trent Alexander-Arnold at the far post and headed home the ball.

It was just a few minutes later that Luis Diaz came close to leveling the score, as he flashed a shot across the face of the goal, but it bounced back off the far post as the runners-up from last season struggled to deal with Fulham’s physicality in the opening 45 minutes.

The ball was worked out to the right of the pitch in the 57th minute, and Neeskens Kebano unleashed a thunderous shot that hit the right post and almost doubled Fulham’s advantage.

Despite being widely tipped to be among the title contenders again this year, Liverpool’s fortunes changed with the introduction of their new signing Nunez in the second half, and the Uruguayan wasted no time in showing why Liverpool paid Benfica an initial amount of €75 million for him.

Nunez tried to tee up his strike partners soon after coming on before netting with a brilliant flicked finish just after the hour mark of the game to draw the match level.

In spite of the fact that Fulham had barely threatened after the break, they were soon back in front when Mitrovic, who scored 43 goals in 44 Championship games last season, was tripped in the box by Virgil van Dijk and the striker stepped up to score from the spot to make it 2-1 for Fulham.

Nevertheless, Liverpool refused to capitulate, and Salah poked home from close range to put them level again at the end of the match. As a result, Jordan Henderson almost clinched all three points for the visitors with a stoppage-time strike, but his effort hit the crossbar and bounced back.
