The ‘raising Kanan’ Ep Teases A ‘reckoning’ For Kanan Over Raq’s & Howard’s Secret In Season 2 Of The Show

In this episode, we get an exclusive scoop from ‘Raising Kanan’ EP Sascha Penn about the secret of Kanan’s real father, as well as a possible path to forgiveness for Marvin, and much more.

It has been announced that Power Book III: Raising Kanan will return for its highly-anticipated second season (along with the renewal of season 3 early).

Season 2 picks up in the aftermath of all the chaos that has been created by the shocking events of the season 1 finale.

There was a moment when Raq ordered Kanan to kill Howard, who also happens to be Raq’s father, but Howard is still alive and is still carrying within him the secret that Raq and Raq kept from him.

It has been reported that showrunner Sascha Penn spoke EXCLUSIVELY with HollywoodLife about how Raq and Kanan’s relationship will evolve in season 2 due to this game-changing secret hanging over their heads for the whole season.

Sascha admitted that this secret will eventually “erupt” and there will be a “reckoning.” He also weighed in on Jukebox’s complicated relationship with her mother and Howard’s legacy at the end of the day. Read our Q&A below:

The ‘raising Kanan’ Ep Teases A ‘reckoning’ For Kanan Over Raq’s & Howard’s Secret In Season 2 Of The Show

As a result of what’s happened with Howard and what Raq expects of Kanan at this point in the episode, where does Kanan and Raq’s relationship go in season 2?

As a matter of fact, I think that it is what is the central focus of season 2 because I think what starts to happen in Kanan is he begins to have doubts about his mother, and part and parcel of having doubts about his mother are him having doubts about himself as well since he has been living in the shadow of his mother for his entire life.

In spite of the fact that she has been his North Star and his son for so long, finding out that she may not be the mother he thought she was is really difficult and shocking for him, and it forces him to try to understand who he is as a Kanan rather than Raq’s son in order for him to cope with this.

With that being said, there is also the whole Howard element of it all as well. Kannan is going to find out about his father’s identity this season, will he learn that Howard is his father?

As much as I do not want to give away too much, I would like to say that the secrets that we have simmer and fester until they are unable to continue and then they come to the surface in unexpected ways.

I think what we can expect in season two is that that secret is going to loom over the entire season in a large way.

There will come a time when there will need to be a reckoning over this, at some point in the future.

At the end of the season finale, neither of them was aware that Howard was still alive at the time. What is Raq’s understanding of how bad things could get for her if this situation continues like this?

Sascha Penn: She does. It is at this point that she begins to second guess herself. Not only are you a businesswoman, but you are also a mother, and that is a condition of being a parent.

There is no doubt that you are constantly second-guessing yourself. There are some seeds of doubt that have been planted in her mind.

Over the course of the whole season, they seem to walk on a tightrope, the two of them, as if on a tightrope.

While they are not wanting to give up too much, each of them is at the same time trying to say something that they cannot quite say because they don’t know what it will mean if they say it.

At the end of the season, I think it’s going to erupt into a big explosion, and I think it’s going to be a lot of fun.

I was wondering what the future holds for Marvin and Jukebox’s relationship in season 2 after that devastating confrontation at the end of last season.?

Sascha Penn: It’s deeply damaged. The question that we grapple with in season 2 is whether the relationship is irreparably damaged and whether it is possible for both of them to be able to heal at all.

Throughout the second season, a big part of Marvin’s journey is figuring out if he is able to redeem himself, and that is a huge part of the story.

In Jukebox’s case, it is a matter of whether she can forgive her father for something that, in my opinion, is an unforgivable act on his part.

Across the second season, it’s a real journey that they both take, and most of the time, it’s a journey that runs parallel to one another.

As part of the story, Jukebox’s mother will also be playing a role, played by LaToya Luckett. What is the beginning of that relationship between Jukebox and her mother, and how does it develop?

Sascha Penn: Jukebox is obviously seeking something. She is searching for the kind of adult in her life who she can love and whom she can trust and who she can believe in.

Fortunately, she finds her mother, and we’ll have to see whether that’s the best course of action for her.

However, I will let you know one thing: it has been brilliantly realized by LaToya Luckett. There is no doubt that she is one of the best.

With leukemia, Howard was already facing his mortality. How does he view life after nearly dying at the hands of his own son?

Sascha Penn: The second season explores his legacy in a way that is thematically important to him.

The reason Howard starts to realize that he doesn’t have much after this brush with death is that he doesn’t have a lot of things.

As far as he is concerned, his life has been nothing more than a job on some level.

It is at this point that he begins to wonder what he is going to leave behind for his family. In the end, he starts to wonder what impact he has had on this world and on this planet over the course of his lifetime.

Whenever you begin thinking along those lines, once you start asking yourself these existential questions, I think the answers you come up with are going to be difficult and they’re going to be tough to come up with.

Through the course of the second season, that is the question that he asks himself: what is my legacy going to be? Can you tell me what I am leaving behind when I leave this world?
