During his first run in the WWE, Ric Flair has opened up about the rampant steroid use he witnessed, claiming they were simply a “way of life” for many of the stars involved.

Professional wrestling has always been about portraying characters that are larger than life, either in terms of their physical appearance or how they are presented in a flamboyant manner.

There began to be an increase in would-be stars looking for ways to stand out from their rivals and move up the card as a result.

This could be achieved in many ways, but one of the most common was to create a look that was almost superhuman and far beyond the reach of the average person on the street in order to achieve this. Many stars have turned to the use of steroids in order to achieve this goal.

WWE was firmly under the microscope by the early 1990s, however, owing to the steroid trials that gripped the company as the early 1990s drew to a close. A ringside doctor, Dr George Zahorian, was convicted of illegally supplying anabolic steroids in 1991, and this led to Vince McMahon being indicted for distributing steroids in 1993, as a consequence of his conviction.

There was a period in time when WWE tightened up their drug policy, and this resulted in smaller stars such as Bret Hart being heavily featured, while the fallout resulted in the Ultimate Warrior and the British Bulldog being forced to leave the company.

The WWE legend reflected on this period of the company’s history as he looked back on his first run as a member of the company, which lasted from 1991 to 1993, during an appearance on the To Be The Man podcast.

There is no doubt that the use of steroids has become a “way of life” for many people, not only in professional wrestling but in other sports as well.

In another episode of the show, Flair stated that the Ultimate Warrior should not have been inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in the first place.
