The Warriors And Draymond Green Appear To Be At An Impasse Over Draymond Green’s Maximum Contract.

This summer the Golden State Warriors are in a bit of a bind when it comes to money while trying to preserve and expand the current championship core that just won its fourth championship in eight years with Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green.

There are also two of these aforementioned players, Thompson and Green, who are due for new contracts shortly, in addition to Jordan Poole and Andrew Wiggins, who is also due for new contracts.

It would be impossible to retain their services if we gave them all nice and lofty new contracts. This would require us to pay a ridiculous luxury tax just to keep their services.

He would be eligible to sign a new contract as early as August 3rd if he chooses to do so.

It has been reported that Green believes he deserves a maximum contract that would lock him in for $164.2 million over the next five seasons, according to sources who spoke to The Athletic’s Anthony Slater and Marcus Thompson II.

There is no doubt in my mind that that is a lot of money for Green, who has not averaged more than eight points per game since 2017 and at times has looked like a shell of the player he once was.

According to Slater and Thompson II, the Warriors do not intend to offer Green a maximum extension, and no movement has been made regarding any kind of extension at this point.”

Green’s reluctance to extend his contract with the Warriors this offseason seems to have less to do with the team’s perception of Green’s value and more to do with the timetable Golden State typically takes to extend contracts.

The Warriors tend to extend a player’s contract once he has completed one year of his current deal, according to Slater and Thompson II, and then consider signing them to an extension at a maximum value.

Even though Green technically has two years left on the four-year extension he signed before the 2019 season, he has the option to opt-out of that contract prior to the end of the current season before he reaches the final year of that deal.

A possibility such as that could force the Warriors’ hand in either direction at some point in the future.

There is a possibility that Draymond Green could explore other options for getting the contract he believes he deserves if the Warriors are not willing to offer him the max contract.

As it should be noted, Green also has a 15 percent trade kicker if the Warriors decide to move him as part of his current contract.

There is no doubt that Green and the Warriors are looking forward to defending their championship while the rest of the league is focused on the Kevin Durant sweepstakes.
