According to the former Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney, if the club is to build a successful team for the future under new manager Erik ten Hag, Cristiano Ronaldo must be allowed to leave the club.
Following United’s failure to qualify for the Champions League last season, the 37-year-old Ronaldo is reportedly looking for a move away from Old Trafford after re-signing from Juventus last season.

In an article for The New York Times, Rooney, who now manages Major League Soccer’s DC United, wrote about his ability to play for any team.

In all competitions, he scored 24 goals for United last season, emerging as one of the few bright spots in a forgettable season for the club that saw them finish sixth in the league.
Ten Hag said this week that he was happy to have a “top striker” like Ronaldo in the squad and was looking forward to working with him in the near future.
It was Rooney, who is United’s all-time leading scorer, who added that he was hopeful Ten Hag would be able to establish a clear playing style at his former club as he has a history of doing quite well there.
In the past season, Rooney said that he was unable to figure out what the team was trying to do in terms of the game plan and was unable to see any patterns of play.
“I think that one of the major things you’ll be able to see from Ten Hag is him really trying to put his own stamp on the playing identity of the team.”
