Long-time assistant and former player Cale Gundy resigned as the Sooners wide receiver coach in a surprise announcement.

During a film session last week, I instructed my players to take notes. As soon as I noticed a player was distracted, I picked up his iPad and read aloud the words on his screen," Gundy wrote.

The words displayed had no connection to football. A word appeared on the screen that I should never have uttered under any circumstances. When I realized what I was reading, I was horrified.

The words I read aloud from that screen were not mine. It wasn't malicious; it wasn't even intentional. However, I am mature enough to know that the words I said were hurtful and shameful.

In my position, I can cause harm without intending to. In such a situation, a man of character accepts responsibility. My mistake is my responsibility. Please accept my apology."

"Our team, its coaches, players, administration, and fans shouldn't be distracted by off-the-field matters," Gundy said, and I'm stepping down effective immediately.."

During his tenure at the University of Oklahoma, Gundy coached a variety of positions. His coaching career spanned two head coaches and he was on his way to playing a pivotal role.

Following Gundy's resignation, Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables issued a statement through the university on behalf of the university.

Our wide receivers will be coached on an interim basis by L'Damian Washington, who has served as an offensive analyst for our program.
