Unexpected levels of benzene, a cancer-causing chemical, have been detected in some Banana Boat sunscreens.

Edgewell Personal Care Company is recalling three batches of Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Sunscreen Spray SPF 30 nationwide.

An internal review found that some samples of the product contained trace levels of benzene.

Benzene is not an ingredient in any Banana Boat product, but the propellant that sprays the product out of the can contains unexpected levels of the chemical.

It should be noted that no other batches of Hair & Scalp (either before or after these batch codes) or Banana Boat products are affected by this recall.

It should be noted that the lot codes of the recalled products, which are located on the bottom of the cans, are 20016AF, 20084BF, and 21139AF.

Multiple retailers distributed the sunscreen sprays, which come in aerosol cans, throughout the United States. Retailers have been notified to remove the recalled products from their shelves.

This product should be stopped from use immediately and disposed of properly," the company advised consumers.

The chemical can be inhaled, ingested, and absorbed through the skin. Cancers of the bone marrow and leukemia can result from it. Blood disorders can also result.

Recalls like this are conducted with the knowledge of the Drug and Cosmetic Administration.
