There is no doubt that the greatest tennis career in history has come to an end. The 2022 US Open is over for Serena Williams after her 7-5, 6-7 (4-7), 6-1 loss to Ajla Tomljanovic on Friday.
The players displayed incredible shotmaking and momentum swings. Williams' last US Open match image may be more memorable than anything that happened during the match.
Having announced her retirement from tennis in early August, the 40-year-old 23-time Grand Slam champion has been well documented in her plans to concentrate on her family and business.
In Williams' third-round loss to Tomljanovic, whose grit and mental toughness resembled the icon across the net, she received every player's best shot.
Williams' shaky forehand contributed to 51 unforced errors in the second set, forcing Tomljanovic to force the tie break. Tomljanovic won the second set and closed out the match in the third.
