It's time to start taking Cameron Young seriously. This is the situation in St. Andrews, Scotland.

The 25-year-old rookie is on his way to becoming the next Scottie Scheffler on the PGA Tour. There is no if and no but when Young emerges as the next American with a bright future.

He shot 19-under 269 at the 150th British Open, finishing second to Cameron Smith after a final-round 7-under 65 at the Old Course.

Having shot four rounds below par, including 64 and 65, and not hoisting a trophy on Sunday isn't common, but Young did just that.

It doesn't matter if you lose by eight or one shot," Young said. However, I played well today. I would have signed up if I had known about 65 earlier. To see Cameron make a 64 was pretty amazing."

Young has finished runner-up four times this season and tied for third twice, including at the PGA Championship. In the FedEx Cup standings, he was ranked No. 32 in the world.

Former Wake Forest product Brian Davis has proven that he is no fluke, and if he wasn't already on Davis Love III's shortlist for the cup, he now is.

One of these times, I'll shoot 5-under on the back and that will be enough, I said at the PGA. I did, and it wasn't," he said. It might be enough for me to shoot 6 on Sunday."

Despite making bogeys at the first and ninth holes on Sunday, Young turned in a 34. He added birdies at Nos. 10, 13 and 14 before his eagle deuce at No. 18.

Young, who shared the lead for a moment until Smith nailed his tap-in birdie at the last hole, said: "I did everything I could." "I didn't think Cameron Smith would make a 4-hole score."
