Even though he missed out on winning his third Wimbledon title since 2010, Nadal will still look forward to competing at the US Open later in the month
Injuries plagued Rafael Nadal in 2022. After suffering a stress fracture in his ribs and then an abdominal tear, he nearly retired earlier this year due to his chronic foot pain.
Nadal has managed to end up in the Wimbledon semifinals for a third consecutive year despite these injuries.
He won the Australian Open and French Open titles, and reached the semis of the French Open as well. After announcing his return on Friday, Nadal revealed the date.
During his quarterfinal match against Taylor Fritz on Wednesday on Centre Court, Rafael Nadal appeared uncomfortable and even took a medical timeout.
A tiebreaker in the fifth set separated Fritz from the 36-year-old on his way to winning the fourth set.
Nadal practiced 45 minutes after suffering a 7 millimeter abdominal tear the day prior. Soon after, Nadal announced his withdrawal from the semi-final against Nick Kyrgios.
In spite of losing his third Wimbledon title since 2010, Nadal hopes to return for the US Open in August. His 22 Grand Slam titles include four at Flushing Meadows.
