Iga Swiatek has won her third major title after defeating Ons Jabeur in the women's US Open final

Swiatek defeated No. 5 Ons Jabeur 6-2, 7-6 (5) to win her first US Open title and third Grand Slam title overall.

Swiatek, who is 55-7 in tour-level matches with seven trophies in 2022, both best in the WTA, said: "This is something I wasn't expecting. I was also surprised a little bit."

As a result of some shaky showings at hard-court tune-up tournaments, she admitted to harboring concerns about the US Open.

Her win is the first by a top-seeded woman since 23-time major champion Williams in 2014.

"On court, I just do my job,'' Swiatek said, "and I'm happy about that, that I can kind of get rid of these doubts."

When she ended up on her back after an off-balance backhand won a point in the next game, she stayed there, enjoying the moment, pumping her fists while laying there.

In that game, Jabeur had three break chances, any one of which would have allowed her to serve out the set. But she couldn't cash in, missing a groundstroke on each.

Swiatek had to wait 10 minutes between her first match point and the one that ended the contest. She might feel more comfortable at the US Open from now on.
