According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post and Jeff Passan of ESPN, the Minnesota Twins are acquiring closer Jorge López from the Baltimore Orioles for a package of prospects.

This season, Lopez has recorded 19 saves in 23 opportunities and has a 1.68 ERA in 44 appearances...

López previously pitched for the Orioles as a starter, but he posted a 3-14 record with a 6.07 ERA in 2021 before being moved to the bullpen in August.

At the time, Orioles manager Brandon Hyde told MLB.com that he needed to try something different....

"We're not shutting the door on him being in the rotation, but I'd like to see how it looks coming out of the bullpen. ... This might take some pressure off of him."

Apparently, the move paid off, and Baltimore will receive pitching prospects Cade Povich and Yennier Canó, among others.

In the AL Central, Minnesota is one game ahead of Cleveland Guardians and has relied heavily on Emilio Pagán as a closer. In 15 chances this season, the 31-year-old veteran has saved nine shots.

The Orioles have a 52-51 record this season after starting 14-24. In the AL East, the team is 2.5 games out of the Wild Card race. Baltimore Orioles traded Trey Mancini to Houston Astros on Monday.
