In Cristiano Ronaldo's first start of the 2022-23 season on Saturday, Manchester United slumped to the bottom of the Premier League standings after losing 4-0 to Brentford.

10 minutes into the game, David de Gea allowed Josh Dasilva's tame, low attempt to slip through his hands and into the back of the net.

United's lackadaisical defense doubled their deficit eight minutes later. In the second half, Christian Eriksen scored after Mathias Jensen harried David De Gea.

Brentford scored their third goal on the half hour mark. A corner was headed across goal by Ivan Toney, and Ben Mee outbattled Lisandro Martinez to head in from close range.

"It was a horrible day," said De Gea. If I had saved the first shot, the result might have been different.

The other teams concede one goal and win 5-1. We need to react much better. The performance was poor."

United had never conceded four goals in the first half away from home in the Premier League. In the second half, Ten Hag's side stopped the flow of conceded goals, but failed to convert their chances.

This was Brentford's first win over United in all competitions since February 1938, when they won 2-0 in the FA Cup. Ten Hag is the first United manager in over 100 years to lose his first two games.
