The longest-reigning monarch in British history, Queen Elizabeth II, has passed away at 96 years old

According to Buckingham Palace, she died peacefully on Sept. 8 at her estate in Balmoral, Scotland.. 

The Britain's longest-serving monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, surpassed Queen Victoria's record in 2015 when she served from 1837 to 1901. 

Elizabeth led the UK through a period of political upheaval after ascending to the throne in 1952. 

Prince Philip, Elizabeth's husband of 73 years and 'strength and stay', died in April 2021 at 99.

Charles, her eldest child, succeeds her on the throne as King Charles III, inheriting the throne from her mother.
