The San Francisco 49ers are expecting to be without free safety Jimmie Ward for a longer period of time than they had initially expected.

According to coach Kyle Shanahan, Ward suffered "pretty bad" hamstring injuries on Aug. 14, which may force him to miss the first month of the season.

Lynch told the broadcast, "He's a safety who plays like a safety but also covers like a corner. It's a big loss to lose our best cover man. We must find a way to step up."

Tashaun Gipson was signed by the Niners on Monday as Ward's replacement. After returning from rib surgery, he was moved from cornerback to safety in camp. It will be Johnson's ninth season in the NFL.

After Ward's injury, Tarvarius Moore and George Odum have also been getting snaps in Ward's place as a result of his absence.

According to league rules, the 49ers cannot place Ward on injured reserve with the option to return until after the 53-man roster is cut down.

Ward must remain on the 53-man roster until after 4 p.m. ET Wednesday before he can be placed on injured reserve. He would have to miss the entire season if it was done before then.
