7-time champion Serena Williams lost to World No. 115 Harmony Tan in one of the most thrilling first-round matches at The Championships.

A staggering 3 hours and 10 minutes of intense competition on Tuesday, June 28, guaranteed her a victory in the 23rd Grand Slam and 7th Championship.

As a result of an injury, Serena Williams had to retire during her first-round match at Wimbledon last year. Though she lost to Harmony Tan 5-7, 6-1, 6-7 (7), she brought joy to her millions of fans.

In spite of slowly but steadily running out of fuel, the 40-year-old kept fighting. In the second set, Serena decimated Harmony after losing the opening set.

As a result, she forced a tie-breaker after saving a match point in the decider. The tie-breaker ended with her down 4-0.

Despite this, Harmony Tan's Wimbledon debut was a brilliant one. Taking down Serena in her 21st Wimbledon, it was only her fourth grass-court tournament in her career.

My heart pounded after I saw the draw. In response to the applause of the center court, Harmony Tan said, "I just wanted to win one or two games.".

As one of the most dramatic women's singles matches at The Championships, Serena has yet to equal Margaret Court's record of 24 Grand Slams.
