'Top Gun: Maverick' is taking the place of 'Avengers: Infinity War' as the sixth-highest grossing movie in the history of domestic box office

Milestones keep rolling in. In North America, "Top Gun: Maverick" has earned $679 million, surpassing Marvel's "Avengers: Infinity War" ($678 million) as the sixth-highest grossing film.

Part one (2019's "Endgame" was part two) of Marvel's epic culmination of more than 20 movies - most of which were box office juggernauts on their own - over a decade. The hype is real.

There's no denying that "Maverick" had Tom Cruise, a box office hero in his own right. The sequel to 1986's "Top Gun" wasn't certain to be a hit; moviegoers hadn't craved speed in more than 30 years.

Still, "Maverick" continues to defy the odds thanks to stellar word-of-mouth and repeat customers. There's a chance the movie will continue to rise in the box office.

Can "Top Gun" beat 2018's blockbuster "Black Panther" and its $700.4 million tally to crack the top five domestic grossers of all time?

Due to the lack of competition, "Top Gun 2" is likely to continue selling tickets. The box office will be fairly quiet until November, when "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" opens.

"Top Gun: Maverick" has generated more than $700 million internationally, and that's without playing in China or Russia.

In addition to the United Kingdom ($95 million), Japan ($82 million), Korea ($62 million), Australia ($60 million) and France ($52.8 million). With $1.379 billion in worldwide sales, it ranks 13th.

A long-delayed sequel to "Top Gun" follows Cruise's Pete "Maverick" Mitchell as he trains a young group of aviators for a dangerous mission.

Miles Teller, Glen Powell, Jon Hamm, Jennifer Connelly, and Val Kilmer, who played Iceman in the first Top Gun, star in this film.
