With her win over world number two Anett Kontaveit at the US Open 2022 singles, Serena Williams advances to the next round of the tournament.
Williams won her second-round singles match Wednesday evening, beating world No. 2 Anett Kontaveit 7-6 (4) 2-6 6-2 at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York in what could be her final US Open.
Williams looked better than she did in previous matches this year, when she was still trying to shake off the rust.
Williams, however, faced a much sterner test against world No. 2 Kontaveit and was undoubtedly the underdog on paper, but certainly not when Arthur Ashe Stadium was packed.
In the third round, Williams will face Ajla Tomljanovic of Australia. On Wednesday, Tomljanovic defeated Russian Evgeniya Rodina 1-6, 6-2, 7-5.
She won her singles opener 6-3 6-3 against Danka Kovinić of Montenegro. After the US Open, Williams announced in Vogue magazine she would "evolve away from tennis."
In addition to 23 grand slam singles titles, Williams has won the US Open six times, most recently in 2014.
The final match of Williams' career will take place at the same site where she won her first grand slam singles title, the 1999 US Open, 40 years ago.
