During his first public comments since joining LIV Golf, Cameron Smith explained why he is leaving the PGA Tour - and why it involves more than just a nine-figure salary.

In his opinion, LIV represents the "future of golf," and the shorter schedule will allow him to spend more time at home.

He spoke to journalists at The International outside Boston, the site of the fourth LIV tournament..

A day after Smith's long-rumored decision became official, he said: "I'm really excited to be here." "This is the future of golf," he said.

It's great out here. Music is playing on the range, and it's a little more laid-back. That stuff is awesome. This is something I can't wait to be a part of."

Smith is the most important signing for LIV to date, as he is the defending champion of two of the five biggest stroke-play events of the year, The Open and The Players.

Even though Smith will be suspended by PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan when he tees it up Friday in the first round of the 54-hole event, Smith has not resigned his membership.

Also making their LIV debuts this week are Leishman, Joaquin Niemann, Harold Varner III, Cameron Tringale, and Anirban Lahiri.

I have spoken with Trevor, and Marc has as well. We are still willing to compete. Smith said, "I hope we can.". Trevor has become a very good friend of mine over the last couple of years.

I hope that Trevor and I will be able to make it to Charlotte and represent Trevor and the Internationals."
